Line and Form: Compositional Elements

In class today we looked at the composition of space. We looked at André Le Nôtre's plan of Versailles and his use of line to lay out his plan.

See below my annotated version of his plan where you can see the use of the goosefoot lines to highlight lines of site. Also the use of a grid to create symmetry in areas of the interest such as the gardens and barracks.
See below my attempt to use similar methods to create a plan of North Place car park.

Creating Concepts

We completed this task in class to force us to create concepts quickly.

Our concept was to be based on a simple shape placed onto the plan, mine was a hexagon. This lead me to explore the juxtaposition between straight and curved lines.

Single Point Perspective

Today in class we had a tutorial on single point perspective. See my attempt below.

Letters I and W

The more you look the more you see.

Our lecturer tasked us with looking for letters within our surroundings.

This week I found I and W

The lines in this paving created a capital I.

The outline of this building creates a W.

Barcelona

Last year I had the opportunity to go to Barcelona.

I found it to be a beautiful city with amazing city planning.

One of the main reasons was to go and see some past projects of Antoni Gaudí. He was a Spanish designer and architect whose designs are very unique.

His first project is filled with fine detailed design elements that link to nature. This is also the project where he began to use Trencadís. This is the process of using broken tiles, traditionally a waste material, to create something beautiful. The reason for inventing this new technique was that Gaudí had incorporated curved walls into his design, meaning traditional glazed square tiles would not fit.

Many other buildings in Barcelona have been designed by him, with his most famous and ambitious project being The Sagrada Familia. Construction of the immense cathedral began on 19 March 1882 and is still uncompleted.
